Highlights of the 14th Chapter Meeting (16th February 2008)
Dear fellow members,
Yesterday's chapter meeting was cosy and fun. In his opening address, James drummed into us the value of 'giving it a shot', because "if we never try, we never know". Wise words from a skydiver indeed. Let's think, what can we do for the first time today?
Runbin attempted to tell jokes and amazingly survived. Wow! Then, like most families on weekends, we found ourselves glued to the TV. (James' sleek Samsung.) The sequel to last meeting's speech training was led by our charismatic Kevin. "Studying the Champion II" included a round robin discussion of three speakers' performances at 2004 World Championship of Public Speaking. Also known as the Olympics of public speaking.
In his P6, Tejpal presented management lessons in the form of entertaining fables. He tickled us with his animal voices. James, in presenting his P9, expounded on leadership in the club. Thought provoking.
After the break, two veteran members, Tracy and Choon Siong gave their evaluations. Both performed stupendously, with Choon Siong emerging as the Better Speech Evaluator. Bravo!
Table Topics was an adrenaline pumping session. Everyone got to speak, including visiting Toastmasters from Cheng San and Tampines Regional Library. Jon, our first-timer timer, got to do a table topic too. Table Topics are just too good to miss. Eventually, Richard Sng (TRL) walked away smiling broadly with the Best Table Topic ribbon.
The afternoon's language was brought into discussion. It was a good challenge for all present to listen closely and learn from each other.
If you weren't there at our meeting yesterday, know that you're in our thoughts. Our next meeting is on 1 March. Do let Kevin or I know if you'll like to hold appointments or present a project.
Regards,
Runbin Yew

Paul Chung believes that ‘Quality of Life depends on the Quality of Communication’. The projects done did not only met the objective but also was very informative and useful for our viewers.

Greeting to all members!

The audience shared their New Year Goals with high spirits of achieving it; some said that they do not believe in setting New Year Goals.

1. To improve pronunciation
2. To better understand the word
Kevin explained about 9 short vowels and 5 long vowels with examples such as how to pronounce “Concentrate” “Conceptions”, “exodus”, “exile” etc. It was very useful as it is not taught in detail in most of the educational institutions. Kevin is very much willing to cover topics such as consonants, stresses etc., based on the feedback and requirement by audience.
Next was the Prepared Speech Session. Our Project Speakers started the speech with a positive note such as New Year Resolution and Health aspects. Jon Tan spoke for the Project P1 (The Ice Breaker) about New Year Resolution and emphasized on how to resolve to be Happy. Ricky Sim spoke for Project P3 (Get to the Point). He got to the main point that involves everyone. i.e., he shared useful Health tips and passed some noteworthy messages like “Smoking is detrimental to Health”, “Meat and Deep Fried food are Toxic” which served as the take away for the day. Our next project speaker was Runbin. Her project was for AP3 (Story Telling). Runbin’s dramatic way of expressing the story impressed the audience. The title of the story is “Good Luck Bad Luck” and the moral of the story is “Unfortunate events can be pleasant, Hope for the Best and Be Prepared for the worst”.
Next was the Project Speech Evaluation by Jeffrey Williams (CL, Toastmasters Club of Singapore), Yoong Ee Chuan (ACB, CL, NTU Alumni and Vice President (Public Relations, Rivervale Toastmasters), Yetti Chiu Yun Ling (CL, Braddell Heights Advanced and President of Kowloon-Singapore Toastmasters). He commented about all appointment holders, the role and how it is carried out. He commended about the display of word of the day on the lectern. Some of the suggestions to improve were to reduce Air-condition, Timing given to the audience for Evaluation is not required etc., it was all very useful for the club to move forward.
Jon Tan won the ribbon for Best Project Speaker. There was a tie between Pradeep and Tracy for the Best Table Topic Speakers.

Highlights of the 10th Chapter Meeting (15th December 2007)
Our final meeting of the year (15 Dec) was a roaring success thanks to you. It was delightful to have people like Cynthia, Shaji and Pradeep in our midst again after a hiatus. Everyone had a wonderful time, blending serious learning with merry-making. If you weren't there, I hope this helps us to stay connected.
Meena kick-started the meeting in a light-hearted manner by having us share our dream holiday destination. Tracy, our club advisor, hosted the meeting with grace and poise.
During his opening address, James set us in a reflective mood by urging each of us to pen down our greatest achievement of the year. Riena then led the induction ceremony to welcome Ricky and Tejpal officially. Following that, yours truly shared tips on language evaluation and encouraged all to attempt this role.
Riena and Tejpal both presented Project 5, touching on the messages conveyed through body language. Riena incorporated a convincing role-play, with Ricky as her 'husband', and emerged as the Better Prepared Speech Speaker. Well done!
Our project evaluators - Winson (Singapore Polytechnic Toastmasters) and Choon Siong, provided insightful feedback to Riena and Tejpal respectively. Body language definitely doesn't lie! Incidentally, 'lying' was the running theme of the meeting's banter.
The table topics session was led by our affable Bee Choo; the topics revolved around Christmas. Pradeep, as eloquent as ever, walked away with the Best Table Topic Speaker ribbon. He generously shared the honour with Saravanan, his personal favourite.
Throughout the meeting, Shaji punctuated his timer's report with 'timely' words of wisdom, tickling us along the way. He certainly deserved the special humour ribbon. Carefully noting our assortment of pause-fillers was Cynthia, our lovely immediate past president.
Our next meeting is set to start 2008 with a bang. If you're keen to make a speech or hold an appointment, Kevin and I welcome you eagerly. See you all on 5 January!
Happy Holidays,
Runbin
Highlights of the 9th Chapter Meeting - 1st December 2007
Today's meeting started with our SAA Kevin warming up the meeting by asking us, “What have you always wanted to do?" We had hilarious wishes from Toastmasters such as sky diving, jumping off a building and even swimming naked.
Next our Language Evaluator DTM Richard Sng gave us the word of the day “hand”, a simple word with a myriad of powerful uses.
James Wai (president) presented the message of “Power of Belief” in his opening address. He encourages examining the limiting belief that is holding us from reaching our goals, and changing it to an empowering one.
Next we have James taking the lead, followed by Santosh and Julie coming to the lectern to tickle us with their jokes.
In the prepared speech session, Pui Pin presented an excellent project 3 speech with his “3 Nos” – No reserve, No retreats and No regrets.
Kevin's project 5’s speech, “The Hermit and the Eagle” captivated the audience with his interesting story, explicit gestures and animated facial eye expressions. With that, he won the Best Speaker ribbon.
Saravanan's project 7’s speech provided an insight of the opportunity and danger lurking in the stock market.
After the break, an expressive poem was shared by Runbin.
In the speech evaluation session, our 3 project evaluators (Winson, James & Runbin) gave a detailed analysis of our speaker’s strengths and provided various areas for improvements. James and Winson tied for the Best Evaluator ribbons.
It was followed by a very exciting and entertaining Table Topics session conducted by our visiting Toastmaster Sivanathan. We had 3 guests and 4 Toastmasters gamely participating in the session. It was won by an eloquent guest speaker (DanQuan) who presented an insightful and convincing speech for the quotation by Walt Disney, “It's kind of fun to do the impossible.”
In the Language Evaluation session, our language ‘father’ divided the evaluation into 3 portions – 3Cs (Creative, Correct & Clear). He commented on the “Creative” use of the language, highlighted on areas that we could improve to have “Correct” use of grammar and gave suggestions on areas where we could be “Clear” in our pronunciation.
Overall, the entire meeting was conducted smoothly, with lots of fun, learning and encouragement. Many thanks to all appointments holders who provided the support necessary for the meeting, and James for writing the meeting highlights that you're reading now! We would have more fun, laughter and learning in our next chapter meeting (15th Dec). See you there!
Best regards,
Runbin with Kevin

Our 3rd Nov chapter meeting was a success made possible by our dedicated appointment holders, esteemed guest evaluators, and a spontaneous audience. Thanks to all members who were present and I certainly missed everyone else!
I'm pleased that Jon has decided to join us! Kudos to him for his first attempt at a Table Topic too. Let's welcome him to our family and support him as he embarks on his Toastmasters journey.
Saravanan (Toastmaster-of-the-Day) and Julie (SAA) guided us through the meeting smoothly. Great! I hope more of us would volunteer to take up these roles in future as a satisfying challenge. Isn't it a rewarding experience, Saravanan and Julie?
Kevin persuaded us to read voraciously as he presented his P9. Tracy narrated a sweet story about her romantic date and emerged as the Best Prepared Speech speaker. Congrats!
Kevin tickled us with his jokes, Runbin read a poem to spice up the meeting and Choon Bin diligently watched the time like a hawk. Thank you! Lubna was the life of the party as an especially encouraging and jovial Table Topic Master, and what's heartening is that every member there attempted a Table Topic. That's the way to go, Changi Simei!
We're also thankful to learn from our esteemed guest evaluators: Michael Wee (PE), Chay Wen Liang (LE), Lynda Neo (GE) and Wong Kok Wah (PE), who provided valuable feedback.
